I think the middle response from Professor Max Coltheart, Dr Kerry Hempenstall, Dr Molly de Lemos, Yvonne Meyer and Professor Kevin Weldall makes a very important point that the draft Australian Curriculum guidance for teaching reading is not detailed and clear enough to support Australian teachers.
It seems to me that if all countries' curriculums (where English is taught) included a comprehensive Alphabetic Code Chart and asked schools to be accountable for teaching the letter/s-sound correspondences on the chart, that would be particularly clear - along with descriptions of the skills of blending and segmenting all-through-the-words, and handwriting.
How simple is that!
Oh - and along with 'don't use the multi-cueing reading strategies which amount to guessing words'.
