I've just discovered the Herts for Learning blog and I am enjoying reading some of the posts - I'm sure others will too:
Spelling Fever: have you caught it yet?

Penny Slater is Assistant Lead Adviser for Primary English at Herts for Learning

I always recommend this book below to engage children in the history of the English language - spoken and written. This is a picture book of extraordinary quality and difference. Children love it, adults love it:
A Street Through Time:

A 12,000-year Journey Along the Same Street
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Street-Through ... 0751355356

And then I recommend getting the children involved in the notion of the alphabetic code AS a code with the early use of Alphabetic Code Charts.

I provide free downloadable charts here:

http://alphabeticcodecharts.com/free_charts.html

Scroll to view the 'giant' charts for main display and the 'mini charts' for tabletop use.

Another great blog from Hertsforlearning:
Do judge a book by its cover
