This piece covers the many elements involved in reading - summarised in broad terms as 'decoding' and 'comprehension'.

Teachers and student-teachers may find it particularly interesting and worth reading.

There is a slight reflection of children deducing alphabetic code knowledge more than being taught a very comprehensive alphabetic code as in the Phonics International programme.

There is mention of children learning an 'initial sight vocabulary' traditionally even with phonics programmes. Just to clarify, with modern synthetic phonics in the UK, we do not advocate an emphasis on teaching an initial sight vocabulary (where common words are taught as global wholes) - rather we 'drip feed' common, more unusually spelt words, within the programme.
