Mini Posters units 1 to 6 - additional 'tricky' words

Additions to Mini Posters

We have added some additional A4 posters with a focus on useful common words and 'tricky' words at the end of the existing Mini Poster strands in units 1 to 6.

Some of these words are likely to be needed for sentence level work before the particular letter/s-sound correspondences have been formally introduced.

Teachers can choose to introduce any helpful words whenever they like by providing simple explanations about these words ('incidental' teaching) and by using the visual aid of the Mini Posters as appropriate (or their own visual aid if the words are not included in the Mini Posters range).

For example, although the letter/s-sound correspondences 'th-th' are not introduced formally until unit 4, the word 'the' is very helpful for any simple sentence-level and text-level work before the formal introduction. If /th/ is introduced at an earlier stage than unit 4, it is also perfectly sensible to use the additional words of 'this', 'that' and 'then' which are all useful words and which are easily blendable once /th/ and 'th' are introduced.

The following additional words are now provided in the Mini Poster range:

Note: Some of these posters include the colour code of the Phonics International units so that it is clear when the Alphabetic Code for those particular words will be taught formally; for example, the 'was', 'want', 'what' words show the letter 'a' in the green colour of unit 8 when they are fully taught.

At no time are teachers prevented from 'incidental' phonics teaching. It is fine for teachers to use their common sense to add any additional phonics teaching as appropriate. Teachers can always teach something briefly and then say, "...and I'll teach you more about that grapheme later..."!
