Read from p.73 - case for the Simple View of Reading model

Post by debbie »

Appendix 1:

This refers to the case for change from the Searchlights Model (multi-cueing reading strategies) to the Simple View of Reading model.

Here is the Independent review of the early teaching of reading (Rose 2006):

Please read from page 73, Appendix 1, to appreciate the rationale behind the Simple View of Reading model.

This is a model which I have found very helpful for understanding the two main elements associated with being a reader - word recognition and language comprehension.

I highly recommend this model and therefore I have provided pdfs of the Simple View of Reading diagram - and also created a Simple View of Writing diagram which teachers may also find helpful.

You can find the pdf for these diagrams on the 'Free Resources' webpage of the Phonics International website:

If anyone finds this information helpful and goes on to use these diagrams for their understanding and/or for their practice, please do share your experiences with others by contacting me at debbie@phonicsinternational.com - or by posting directly onto this thread!

Thank you!
