Unit 6 - Resources for schools doing the Y1 Phonics Check

Post by debbie »

We have just uploaded an additional resource on the Unit 6 webpage called:

EXTRA SOUNDS BOOK ACTIVITY SHEETS WITH TEXTS - for schools in England where children take part in the Year One Phonics Screening Check.

These Sounds Book Activity Sheets with built-in texts introduce various letter/s-sound correspondences ahead of the original order in Phonics International.

This additional resource is an optional extra for schools in England to address the correspondences which may appear in the statutory Year One Phonics Screening Check (which takes place annually in England at the end of Year One when most children are six years old).

Teachers can simply introduce these correspondences, however, through their wider, incidental phonics teaching with frequent reference to the Alphabetic Code Charts in phonics lessons whenever reading and writing is involved in the wider curriculum.

We have also uploaded a useful new resource to outline the correspondences introduced in each of the 12 Units of work in Phonics International. This resource can be found on the 'Free Resources' page.

On this grid, you can see 'which' correspondences have now been added to Unit 6:

On the Unit 6 webpage, you can find the new resources directly below the original SOUNDS BOOK ACTIVITY SHEETS section with the pale yellow background.

This placement of the new Sounds Book Activity Sheets with built-in texts suggests that schools in England that use Phonics International in a planned way from Reception (4 to 5 year olds) may complete up to, and including, the Unit 6 resources by the end of Year One.

Of course some schools may not have reached this point if they have not used the PI programme routinely and rigorously from the beginning.

Over time, teachers will find the correct pace and expectation for the pupils in their schools.

Please remember that Phonics International is designed, for example, for whole primary schools - therefore it is not expected that infant teachers will reach the highest Units of work.

Teachers using the PI programme with older pupils will have vocabulary, spelling and comprehension in mind in the junior or Key Stage Two classes (7 to 11 year olds) - and for secondary-aged pupils as required.
